Fall/Spring Outdoor Recreation
Let’s get outdoors! This course integrates nature, exercise, play and outdoor skills into adventure based experiences that increase our overall health and wellbeing. Learn about eco-wellness, while you develop both hard and soft skills. Examples of hard skills include knot tying, shelter building, fire building, map reading, wildlife safety, risk management and other skills that are vital for the outdoor recreationist. Soft skills include communication, collaboration, decision making and problem solving, which are equally important. Each week we’ll be spending time outdoors hiking, exploring and engaging in activities that develop our outdoor skills.
Winter Outdoor Recreation
Learning to play in the snow will keep us active and healthy throughout the year, and develop a love for our Alaskan winters. Cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing are just some of the activities we’ll get to learn and experience. Winter self care, recognizing and treating cold weather injuries, decision making, learning about avalanche hazards and emergency responses are all components to this winter outdoor recreation course. Onward & Upward will provide transportation and all necessary gear students will need to embrace these winter activities.
“I learned on this course that even when you are in a bad mood, you have the ability to change your mindset, and sometimes you need to think of what’s best for your fellow teammates.”
